A Day at the Links

When it comes to spring and summer time, nothing could be better than a day at the links.  Whether it's a twilight round, a day with some friends, or heavy betting and competition, golf is easily the best of all worlds.  I have played golf since I was ten, was on my high school team, and still play recreationally as often as I can.  For me, avid is an understatement.

It isn't just playing golf that attracts me to sporting activites.  I am die-hard fan of all the teams and represent my colors whenever playoff time comes around.  Whether it be my alma mater the Michigan State Spartans, the silver and black Oakland Raiders, the pride of Canada Toronto Maple Leafs, or the numerous others I support, I am always will to talk about, or argue over, my favorite teams.  And, just as golf has, sports fandom has made me quite a competitive person in all walks of life.  It is something that has inspired me to use competition in my teaching.  In the right context and with the right guidance, competition can be a great motivator for students to achieve and push themselves to take risks.

Nothing Stumps a Caddie

When it comes to golf, what better job could their be.  I have been a caddie or worked at a golf course for over ten years now.  I enjoy every minute of being outdoors and helping people with the sport I love.  I even received the Evans Scholarship, the house pictured, when I was eightteen.  It is a full ride, full room scholarship for excellent caddies with excellent grades.  The house has become a dear part of my life and I am very proud to represent it always.

The Era of an Artist

One of my greatest interests, and one of the major reasons I entered this profession, is writing.  I love to dabble, writing some occasionally poetry here and there, or creating maps of vivid worlds.  I have started writing two narratives, one a prequel to the Stevenson Classic Treasure Island, one an untitled epic poem about a young boy in medieval times on his adventurous road to heroism.  And just as much as I enjoy writing, I enjoy reading the writing of others.  I am the English paper reviewer in my house, and all my roommates and housemates come to me whenever they are in need.  Hopefully this means grading papers won't be too much of a struggle (I'll keep my fingers crossed).

The Hero in All of Us.

I think one of the greatest aspect of literature is finding a connection with the main character.  I have always been a thrill seeker, whether it be white water rafting, skydiving, parasailing, or just seeking overall adventure.  For that reason I find enjoyment in the adventure novel and character.  Aragorn, Beowulf, or even the video game character Link (pictured), are all characters that hold qualities that for an adventurer can really connect me with them.  I hope that through teaching English I can also help students find connections with the characters they read about.  It makes reading that much more enjoyable.
